Number 1: Golf is a game and games are fun!

We play golf to enjoy the challenge, the company of others, and maybe even that one perfect shot. So let’s have fun no matter what!

Number 2: Everyone is capable of making a good swing!

In most cases, people take golf lessons to find out what they are doing wrong. The best approach is to find out what you do well and build upon it. The mind cannot focus on a negative. In other words, try for the next 20 seconds not to think about ice cream. The only way you can avoid it is to think about something else, which is….focusing on a positive thought.

The best and simplest thought for a lot of us is the one I teach junior golfers. To swing aggressive through to a picture perfect finish.

Number 3: If you want to improve you must have a plan.

Improvement takes several steps:

• Written and well defined goals

• Formal Coaching from someone who has a genuine interest in your improvement

• Consistent practice habits

• Passion for improvement

• Love to practice

• Tracking progress so that you can see the improvement

• Commitment and patience to reach goals

Number 4: Golf is a game for a lifetime and crosses all social boundaries.

There is no other physical sport that allows us to be competitive no matter what our age. My father made his first hole in one at the age of eighty years old. I’ve given lessons to a seventy-five year old gentleman who played 100 rounds a year and his physical condition was superior to most half his age.

One of my fondest memories of this game is spending the afternoon with someone half my age, another twice my age, and a golfer born in another country. And we all enjoyed a great afternoon together. In fact, it’s the only game I’ve played with a grandfather, father and son.

So, no matter what, always remember rule #1.
